Continuous Inkjet Marking on Braided Cable: Inline Identification Guide
Cable and wire products often require model numbers, production dates, batch references, meter marks or customer-specific identifiers. Braided cable adds an extra challenge because the surface is textured and can rotate as it moves. This application shows a continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer integrated with a cable handling system to create repeatable inline identification.
Control Speed and Product Direction
The printer must receive a reliable speed signal so character width and repeat distance stay consistent. If the cable line accelerates or slows, an encoder can help synchronize printing with product movement. Guides should minimize lateral movement and rotation before the printhead.

Position the Printhead for a Textured Surface
Braiding creates small changes in height. CIJ printing is useful because the nozzle does not touch the cable, but the standoff distance should still be controlled. A rigid mount and a guide close to the print position help prevent blurred or stretched characters. The message orientation should also remain visible after coiling and installation.

Match Ink to the Jacket or Braid
Contrast is only one requirement. The ink must also bond to the actual cable surface and resist normal handling. Dark cable may need a light or pigmented ink, while light braid can often use a dark dye ink. Always test drying time, rub resistance and flexibility after the cable is bent or coiled.
Plan Repeat Distance and Message Content
Cable codes may repeat at a fixed interval. The interval should be short enough that installers and inspectors can find identification without excessive searching, but long enough to keep the mark readable and economical. Use a standard message template and lock fixed fields where possible.

Commissioning Checklist
- Confirm line speed range and acceleration behavior.
- Use an encoder when variable speed affects print width.
- Guide the cable to reduce rotation and vibration.
- Test ink adhesion after bending and coiling.
- Measure code repeat distance during a production run.
A correctly integrated CIJ printer can give cable manufacturers flexible, label-free identification while the product continues through the line. DAYSJET can review your cable diameter, surface, line speed, message height and repeat-distance requirements before application testing.
