Food Can Lid Date Coding on a Conveyor Line: A Practical CIJ Setup

By admin Applications

Food cans need clear production dates, batch numbers and other traceability information that remain readable through packing, storage and distribution. The video behind this application shows cans moving through a conveyor while a continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer is integrated beside the line to code the lid area.

Why Lid Coding Needs Stable Handling

The top surface of a can is small, reflective and moving. If the can changes position or rotates, the printed message may shift outside the intended area. Conveyor rails should guide the container without causing vibration, and the coding station should be located after the can has settled into a repeatable path.

Set the Trigger and Print Position

A photoelectric sensor tells the printer when each can reaches the coding point. The sensor must detect one product at a time and remain protected from reflections, dust and accidental movement. The delay value in the printer controls where the message appears after the sensor is triggered. During setup, run several cans at normal speed and adjust the delay until the code stays in the same lid area.

Ink Selection for Metal Lids

Metal and coated lids can differ in adhesion and drying behavior. A production test should evaluate contrast, drying time and resistance to handling. The correct ink should dry before the cans reach downstream contact points. If condensation, oil or dust is present, the surface condition should be controlled before printing.

Quality Checks for Every Shift

Operators should confirm the date format, batch message, line number and print legibility at startup. A simple sample check after product changeovers or message edits reduces the risk of an incorrect code continuing through a large batch. The printhead face and sensor lens should also be included in the regular cleaning routine.

Recommended Setup Points

  • Guide cans into a stable and repeatable path.
  • Mount the printhead securely above the target area.
  • Protect the sensor from reflections and movement.
  • Test ink on the actual coated or uncoated lid.
  • Verify the first code after every message change.

CIJ technology is well suited to food can lines because it prints changing information at speed without touching the package. DAYSJET can evaluate your lid material, required message, available mounting space and line speed to recommend a practical coding configuration.
