Continuous Inkjet Printing on Flexible Pouches: Stable Date and Batch Codes
Flexible pouches are widely used for food, agricultural products, chemicals and daily-use goods. Their low weight and fast packaging speed are valuable, but the moving and sometimes curved surface can make coding difficult. In this application, a continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer applies production dates, batch numbers and traceability information directly to red flexible pouches as they move through the line.
Why CIJ Works Well on Flexible Packaging
CIJ printing is a non-contact process. The printhead does not need to touch the pouch, which helps when products vary slightly in position or the film moves at production speed. A compact message can be changed from the touchscreen without replacing plates or labels, making the system suitable for short batches and frequent production updates.

Control the Product Before Printing
Flexible materials can swing, wrinkle or change distance from the nozzle. For consistent characters, the pouch should pass the printhead in a repeatable position. Side guides, a stable conveyor and a correctly placed photoelectric sensor reduce missed prints and uneven character height. The printhead should be mounted where the packaging surface is as flat as possible.

Choose Ink for the Film Surface
Packaging films differ in surface energy, coating and resistance requirements. Before production, test adhesion on the actual pouch material and check the result after handling, stacking and storage. Fast-drying dye ink is common for many packaging lines, while special inks may be needed when the surface is difficult to bond, exposed to moisture or subject to abrasion.
Build a Repeatable Operator Workflow
The message should include only the information required by the production and traceability process. Operators can select the correct template, update variable data and confirm the print counter from the interface. A first-piece check at every changeover helps catch an incorrect date, misplaced code or weak contrast before the batch continues.

Practical Checklist
- Stabilize the pouch and sensor trigger point.
- Keep the nozzle distance and print angle consistent.
- Test ink adhesion on the real packaging film.
- Use a clear message template for date and batch data.
- Inspect the first printed pouch after every changeover.
A well-integrated CIJ system can give flexible packaging lines a simple and efficient way to add variable production information without slowing the process.
