Batch Coding on Plastic Cups and Clear Packaging with CIJ Printers

By admin Applications

Plastic cups and clear overwrap are common in foodservice, consumer goods and industrial packaging. They are lightweight and economical, but transparent film, curved products and static movement can make variable coding harder to control. This application shows a continuous inkjet (CIJ) system printing a compact batch message on clear packaging around stacked plastic cups.

Start with Contrast and Readability

Transparent packaging has no solid background, so the code is read against the product behind the film. Dark ink usually works well when the packed item is white or light colored. The code should be placed where folds, seams and printed graphics will not reduce legibility. Testing the real packed product is more reliable than testing an empty film sample.

Keep the Film at a Consistent Distance

Loose film can move toward or away from the printhead. A simple guide or stabilized conveyor section helps keep the target surface in the print window. The nozzle should be close enough for sharp characters but still leave safe clearance for package variation. The sensor should trigger from a stable product feature rather than a loose edge.

Test Ink Adhesion on the Actual Plastic

Clear films may be made from polyethylene, polypropylene or other materials with different surface treatments. Select an ink only after checking drying time and adhesion on the exact film. Rub tests, tape tests and short storage trials can reveal whether the code will survive packing and distribution.

Make Changeovers Simple

Operators should use saved message templates for common products and edit only the required date or batch fields. Clear naming reduces selection errors. After each message change, print one sample and confirm content, position and contrast before restarting normal production.

Key Integration Checks

  • Evaluate the code on the completed transparent package.
  • Avoid folds, seams and highly reflective areas.
  • Stabilize the film near the printhead and sensor.
  • Confirm ink adhesion on the exact plastic material.
  • Use a first-piece check after every changeover.

With the right ink and a stable product path, CIJ printing can add clear batch, date and traceability information to plastic cups and clear packaging at production speed. Send DAYSJET a material sample and your line requirements for application testing.
