Automated QR Code Printing on Metal Components: CIJ Integration Tips

By admin Applications

Manufacturers increasingly use QR codes and other machine-readable marks to connect components with production data, inspection records and assembly history. The application shown here combines a continuous inkjet (CIJ) printer with automated equipment that presents metal components to a controlled coding station.

Integration Begins with a Stable Part Position

A two-dimensional code contains more information than a simple date line, so the dots must remain accurately positioned. Fixtures should hold every component at the same height, angle and distance from the printhead. Movement during the print cycle can reduce code quality and scanning reliability.

Coordinate the Printer and PLC

The line controller can send a print trigger only after the part reaches the coding position. It may also select a message, transfer variable data or receive a ready/fault signal from the printer. Clear signal logic prevents double printing, missed parts and printing during a machine stop.

Design the Code for the Available Area

The code must fit the flat printable zone while leaving enough quiet space around it for scanning. A larger module size is usually easier to read than an extremely compact symbol. Before production, test the code with the actual scanner, viewing angle, lighting and expected surface finish.

Consider Ink and Metal Surface Condition

Oil, coolant, dust and reflective coatings can affect adhesion and contrast. The surface should be clean and consistent at the coding point. Select ink according to the metal finish and required resistance, then verify drying time before the next fixture or handling step.

Verification Is Part of the System

  • Scan samples using the intended production reader.
  • Define pass/fail rules for missing or weak codes.
  • Prevent duplicate serial or batch data.
  • Store the relationship between code and production record.
  • Provide a controlled reject or alarm process.

Automated CIJ integration can add flexible traceability to metal parts without a separate label. The best result comes from treating the printer, fixture, PLC and verification system as one process. DAYSJET can support application testing and communication planning for your automated coding project.
